FOTD: Christmas Eve 2011

When I think of Christmas, the first thing I think of is the color RED. When deciding my makeup for this Christmas Eve I contemplated many different looks including a bold, red lip but in the end I went with a sparkly, smokey eye and subtle pink/nude lip look. I decided to use my new Tarte Puttin’ on the Glitz Eye Shadow Palette (I will post a review on this palette later on once I have used it thoroughly). Below are some pictures of my makeup and a list of products I used to achieve my FOTD, Face of the Day.

Mani Mondays: Holiday Nails

The holidays are just around the corner! Between gift shopping for your loved ones and prepping for the festivities it is important not to forget to pamper and glam up for the holidays. In honor of the holiday spirit, this week's Mani Mondays is all about Holiday Nails.

There are many different approaches to holiday nails. It all really just depends on your style and the look you're going for. The mani look I'm wearing is a more classic, traditional red nail. I decided to go with Butter London's Saucy Jack, which is described as a dark, blood red. I don't think it is a dark, blood red but I do think it's a gorgeous red that shines like a Christmas tree ornament.

Below are some pictures of Butter London's Saucy Jack...

Now, for those of you who like to be more creative with their mani looks for the holidays here are some fun, festive nail looks to give a try.

Mani Mondays: Bangle Jangle

Winter is such a beautiful time of year with beautiful holiday decorations, snippy cold weather, and hot cocoa. Well, at least if you live in a cold weathered area unlike me but I still love the idea of Winter. So, in the spirit of including Winter in my tropical weathered world I am painting my nails with Essie's Winter Collection 2011

I couldn't decide on just one color from this collection so I purchased a mini bottle collection that includes Cocktail Bling, Bobbing for Baubles, Size Matters, and Bangle Jangle. These mini 0.16oz nail polishes are perfect if you want a few colors to try out without committing to a full sized bottle.

For today's Mani Mondays, I went with Bangle Jangle. Essie describes this color as a lavender amethyst. This is such a beautiful lavender color that isn't too matte so it gives the color nice dimension.

Below are pictures of Bangle Jangle...

I hope everyone is having an amazing Winter season!

If you've tried any of the colors from Essie's Winter Collection 2011, what are your thoughts? Or what color do you want to try?

Have a happy Monday!

Just Bitten

Just Bitten is the perfect description for the ideal look you seek in a lip stain. Props to Revlon for taking the name for their lip stain and balm lip combo. During 2011, Revlon launched their Colorstay Just Bitten Lip Stain & Balm. I was quite intrigued by this launch because I have always been a fan of lip stains, well in theory that is. I hadn't purchased a lip stain until this past summer which was from Cover Girl's lip stain launch. I wasn't quite impressed with my Cover Girl Lip Stain experience so I was a little hesitant to give Revlon's version a try. Another reason why I wanted to try this lip stain was because there were TV and Magazine ADs all over the place and after seeing them over and over, the product lingered in the back of my mind.

I skipped out on this product a few times during different trips to the drugstore but then after hearing a few reviews on the product and the fact that they were on a great sale at my local drugstore, I decided to give it a go. I ended up with 6 of the 15 shades available. Please keep in mind that when the line launched there were only 10 shades available.

Revlon claims that the product has an easy application, the color does not smudge or streak, and the translucent balm provides instant moisture and shine.

What I liked about this product is that it's easily available, reasonably priced (between $7-10), has a good color selection, has buildable coverage, and has an easy application. What I didn't like about the product was that color didn't last as long as it claims to, you can see the color come off when you eat and drink, and  the lip balm easily breaks off. All in all, I would recommend this lip stain if you're looking for an inexpensive product that will give you a nice color and you don't mind having to reapply.

Even though the staying power isn't the greatest there are some ways around it to make the best out of the product. If I'm going for a more subtle look, I apply the lip stain then use a tissue to remove the excess and this makes the color last without smudging off as much when I eat or drink. If I'm going for more of an intense color then I apply a few times then wait about 30 seconds then blot with a tissue. When I do this the color tends to last a little longer.

My favorite colors are Crave, Frenzy, and Gothic. These colors have more pigmentation and seem to have  better staying power than the other colors I tried. These three colors are also good to use as a base for your lipstick when using red or berry colors. I wouldn't repurchase any of Just Bitten Lip Stains except for Crave, Frenzy, and Gothic.

Below are some pictures and swatches...

Dawn, Passion, Flame, Gothic, Frenzy, Crave

Have you tried Revlon Just Bitten? If you have, what are you thoughts on it?
Are there any lip stains you recommend?

Mani Mondays: Power Clutch

Nothing is better than freshly painted nails. I just love how a fresh, new manicure looks so polished and put together. It truly is a great way to finish off any outfit. With that said, I have been obsessed with changing my polish color very frequently and this is why Mani Mondays are some of my favorite posts. This week I decided to go with Essie Power Clutch, which is a striking, deep gray-green. Grays have been a big trend this fall and winter so this was a great choice. I love that it's a dark gray with a nice sheen to it. At first, I wasn't too sure about the color but once I applied it to my nails, I was won over!

Below are some pictures of Essie Power Clutch...

Mani Mondays: Thanksgiving Inspired

In honor of Thanksgiving being this week, I decided this week’s Mani would be a festive, fall color. Instead of going with a burnt orange or brown toned nail color I decided to go with a metallic, ruby red. I chose Essie’s Wrapped in Rubies. This color instantly reminds me fall decorations and the holiday season. It just screams fancy, festive nails. It also incorporates this season’s metallic trend that is very big! This is a great color now for the holiday season not just Thanksgiving. Below are some pictures of Essie’s Wrapped in Rubies.

Sigma Beauty Brushes

During Summer 2010, I randomly started watching beauty videos on YouTube. Little by little I learned of the different beauty gurus, product suggestions and reviews. There was one item/brand that everyone talked about all the time and that was Sigma Beauty. All the gurus talked about how great Sigma brushes were, how they were great dupes for MAC brushes, and the raves went on and on. I really wasn't sure whether or not these brushes truly lived up to the hype. After a few months of hearing reviews and doing some research on them as well, I decided I would give them a chance because I needed a new, complete brush set.

About a year ago, I purchased the Sigma Complete Kit without Brush Roll. I really wasn’t sure if these brushes would be worth it but they proved me wrong from day one. As soon as I opened the package, I felt the brush hairs to see if they were soft or hard and brittle like many inexpensive brushes out there. These brushes were so soft, they passed the first test as to whether they were worth it. I then put them through test #2, a deep cleaning. If these brushes could go through a deep cleaning and still keep their shape, stay soft, and not shed excessively they would prove themselves. Lucky for the brushes they passed test #2 which for me is one of the most important tests for any makeup brush. Then, came test #3, which was the actual application of makeup with these brushes. I was seriously impressed at how seamlessly these brushes worked. These brushes were the real deal and the best part of all was they weren’t ridiculously expensive, a major bonus in my book!

Steps to Healthy, Glowing Skin

healthy-skin-01

The first thing everyone sees is our skin. Our skin is our largest organ and it protects us from everything around us. When I say everything around us, I mean EVERYTHING! Just think of all the toxins and pollutants in the air that we are exposed to day in and day out. Our skin is tough to deal with all of it. So as a thank you to our skin for all its hard work, we should work hard to keep our skin healthy! Here are the keys we must remember: hydration, cleansing, moisturizing, and protection.

There are many things we can do to help our skin stay healthy so it can keep up the great work it does. Can you guess which is the MOST important of all? If you guessed drinking good ol’ water, then you’re right! Drinking water is the key to healthy, glowing skin. Not only does water help our insides but it does wonders for our outsides. Water keeps our bodies hydrated and if we’re hydrated you’ll see it in your skin. It’s suggested we drink 8 – 8oz. glasses of water a day, but you can definitely drink more than that. Later on I’ll be dedicating an entire post to the wonders of water but for now the most important thing to remember about water is DRINK, DRINK, DRINK!

Besides drinking water, we should take the time to setup a skin care regimen. It doesn’t matter whether you never wear makeup or wear makeup all day, everyday. A skin care regimen will be the boost to your skin to help keep it protected from the sun, dirt, toxins, and pollutants in our environments. The most important part of any skin care regimen is consistency.

You should be cleansing your face twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. By doing this you’ll be removing everything your skin is coming in contact with. It doesn’t matter if you use a drugstore product or higher end product, but you should be using a facial cleanser twice a day to remove all the dirt your skin comes in contact with. Most importantly, you should ALWAYS cleanse your face in the evening. Think of it this way, you’re out and about all day long, being exposed to dirt, germs, etc. if you don’t wash all this off then it will just accumulate deep in your skin and eventually cause dull skin and breakouts. Daily cleansing is very important but we should also remember to exfoliate 1-2 times a week depending on our skin type and condition. By exfoliating, we are removing all that dirt that has become trapped inside our pores that daily cleansing has missed. We are also removing the top layer of dead skin cells that’s lingering around, which if it isn’t removed causes our skin to look dull and causes breakouts.

Now that we have cleansing down packed, another important step to healthy, glowing skin is moisturizing. After you cleanse your face, you should always use a moisturizer. A moisturizer will keep your face hydrated, soft and smooth. When you don’t use a moisturizer your face tends to get dried out and even flaky, which in the long run will cause premature aging and wrinkles. I know when we’re all young we want to look older, but this is definitely not the way you want to achieve an older look. Haha.

So, now that we know the importance of hydration, cleansing, and moisturizing we are moving on to protection. Solar protection is VERY, I mean VERY important. Many of us only think of applying sun block when we go to the beach or plan on spending the day out if the sun is strong. Guess what? The sun is ALWAYS strong. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to apply sun block on a DAILY basis whether it’s sunny or shady or hot or cold. Sometimes the worst sun burns come from cloudy days we think we’re not being exposed to the sun. Sun damage hurts our skin in many ways. Not only does sun exposure raise our risk of skin cancer but it also helps the aging process. I know looking bronzed and tan is very appealing, this is coming from someone who is tan for most part and easily tans, but there are healthy ways to achieve a tan, bronzed look without overly increasing your risk for skin cancer and premature aging. Remember to use a sun protector with at least SPF30 and make sure that it covers UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are responsible for aging and UVB rays are responsible for burning. An easy way to remember this is the A in UVA represents Aging and the B in UVB represents Burning.

So, remember everything your skin does for you all day, every day and take the time to give it some TLC. By remembering these steps you’ll have healthy, glowing skin in no time!

Is there anything specific you do to keep your skin healthy?

FOTD: November 13th ♥

For today's FOTD, Face of the Day, I went with a simple, neutral brown makeup look. For the past few weeks I have been on a neutral makeup look kick. It might be because whenever I would do my makeup in the past, I would go all out or maybe because I used to never truly be into neutral, brown colored eye makeup. But I must say, brown eye shadows are actually very versatile and offer some amazing results.

I chose this neutral brown makeup look because I was attending my cousin's baby shower. The shower was held in the early afternoon so it was a very appropriate look for the time of day. Below are some pictures of my makeup and the products I used. In some of the pictures you might see that I curled my hair, I thought it was a great way to add dimension to the overall look since my makeup was on the simple, earthy tones side.

Want a Flawless Makeup Application?

In the years I have been wearing makeup my goal has always been a flawless application. More importantly a flawless foundation application since no one really wants a “cakey” looking face, and many of us have been there on a few occasions. In trying to achieve that flawless application, I have tried several different tools from sponges to brushes. As we all know, the YouTube beauty community is pretty large so of course in my search for product reviews and recommendations I checked out YouTube. I learned about The Original BeautyBlender sponge. Even though countless individuals recommended the BeautyBlender, I had to do my own research to see why this sponge was so amazing.

DSC01535-1
Dry BeautyBlender (on left) & Damp BeautyBlender (on right)

About six months ago, I ordered my BeautyBlender from Sephora and I am so happy that I did. The perfect word to describe this sponge is AMAZING. I highly recommend this product and truly believe everyone should own one. The BeautyBlender is simple to use and it’s results are flawless, what else could be better? The BeautyBlender is a pink, egg-shaped sponge (pictured above) that doubles in size when dampened. Below are the simple steps on how the sponge should be used.

  1. Place sponge under running water and squeeze excess water out until the sponge is damp.
  2. Dip sponge into product that is being applied (foundation, concealer, blush) – I do this by applying my foundation & concealer on the back of my hand and stippling (also known as bouncing the sponge) the product onto the sponge.
  3. Once product is on the BeautyBlender, begin stippling the sponge onto the face. Basically you’re bouncing the sponge against your face. By doing this you’re blending your product seamlessly. This is what gives you that flawless finish.

Here’s a video from YouTube posted by BeautyBlender that shows how to use the sponge…

Mani Mondays: Fall's Grey Trend

True greys are a trend this Fall in the world of nail polish. Whether it's a pale grey or a metallic grey, greys are back! In honor of this trend, I decided to paint my nails this week a metallic grey. So, I went with Butter London Chimney Sweep.

Butter London in Chimney Sweep

When I saw this color at Ulta, it was love at first sight. It reminded me of the color of my first car. It's a darker, charcoal metallic grey instead of a silvery metallic. Butter London describes Chimney Sweep as "Smudgy, sexy, and just a little dirty. A proper charcoal grey with a touch of a metallic finish. Hot." I completely agree with their description because it truly is a proper charcoal grey!

Below are some more pictures of Chimney Sweep...

What’s your mani look for this week?

Local Scoop: Skincare by Pevonia

Skin care is very important not only for our appearance but for our health as well. The skin is the body's largest organ which works as a barrier from the world around us. For this reason, it is very important to take care of our skin. We achieve healthy skin with our diet, exercise, and at-home skin care regimens as well as professional treatments. Professional treatments such as facials are not only relaxing and pampering but they help us achieve beautiful, flawless skin. We all know spa treatments can be expensive and for this reason we pass on them many times. There's no need for that anymore because I have the scoop on a wonderful local spa in the Miami area that offers wonderful skin care treatments at amazing prices.

This local gem I am speaking of is Skincare by Pevonia. This spa is located in the South Miami area near Coral Gables. Having grown up mostly in Miami, I have tried several spas in the past and none of them come close to Skincare by Pevonia. I have never had a facial like the ones available here. Usually when you treat yourself to a facial, you leave with red markings and swelling or puffiness but you won't experience any of that at Skincare by Pevonia. I recently had a Microdermabrasion treatment and left the spa with a glowing complexion instead of a red and puffy face, which is a miracle since I have very sensitive skin. Being that I work at the spa, I see clients every day before and after their treatments and they would all tell you the same thing. All of the estheticians are amazingly talented in their craft. You can't go wrong with any of them.  In addition to the amazing service, the spa offers reasonable prices that can’t be beaten. There are also monthly promotions that offer a great opportunity for luxury treatments at affordable pricing as an added bonus.

The spa uses Pevonia Botanica products which are made with organic extracts, are paraben-free, alcohol free, lanolin-free, mineral-oil free, PABA-free, NO Formaldehyde, and No Artificial Colors. So not only are they healthy for your skin but eco-friendly as well.

Some of the services available at the spa are facials, including oxygen and microdermabrasion, facial peels, massages, and Endermologie to name a few. The spa is also a retailer of Pevonia Botanica products for at-home regimens. Visit Skincare by Pevonia’s website for a more detailed look at all the services available.

Don’t forget to LIKE the spa on Facebook to get up to date information on all spa happenings including skin care tips and special promotions.

Mani Mondays: Alma Mater Love

For Mani Monday, I decided to make it a tribute to my Alma Mater. This week is Homecoming Week, which is a huge deal at my school. I recently graduated so all my Homecoming memories are still fresh in my mind but I wouldn’t miss it for anything. Homecoming at my Alma Mater consists of week long festivities that include: Opening Ceremonies, O-Cheer – an Organized Cheer Competition that consists of dancing and a skit, Spirit Tree – where competing Organizations make an ornament to be presented, Alma Mater Competition, Parade and Howl, Concert and of course the Homecoming game! Student Organizations and Greek Organizations choose to participate in Homecoming to hopefully place in the competition and have bragging rights for the next year.

My mani consists of a twist on the Ombre manicure trend. Since my school’s colors are orange and green I decided to paint all my nails minus the ring finger nail in OPI’s Jade Is The New Black and the ring finger nails in Sally Hanson XTreme Wear #150 Sun Kissed.

I can’t wait to attend Homecoming events this week and show my love and pride for my Alma Mater!

L’Oreal Colour Riche leGloss

I consider lip gloss an essential makeup staple. Lip gloss is not only great to add a little shine and color to our naked lips but it’s quick and easy too. I have always been loyal to my lip gloss love even back to my barely-there makeup days of early teen-hood.

As I’ve mentioned, for many years I was a MAC only kind of girl but have opened myself up to the vast land of beauty brands out there. In my search to try new products, especially drugstore since I never experimented when I was younger, I decided to give the L’Oreal Colour Riche leGloss a try.

First off, I had to try it because I had seen several ads for them in my magazines. So, of course they were embedded in the back of my mind (the wonders of advertising I tell you). Secondly, L’Oreal products seem to be of better quality in the drugstore, in my opinion of course. Lastly, they were on promotion at my local CVS at the time so of course I couldn’t pass on a good deal ;)

My thoughts on the product:
  • Nice range in color selection – always an added bonus!
  • Sheer color coverage that is buildable to a more of an intense color application if you like – this is great because depending on the look you’re going for this gloss can be a go-to product.
  • The formula is not sticky or runny – in my past experience lip glosses that come in a squeeze tube tend to be very “watery'” and runny and quite sticky. I LOVED that this was not because sticky lip glosses are drying. And no one wants dry looking lips.
  • Product is moisturizing – your lips feel soft and creamy as soon as you apply the product and that feel lasts.
  • Has a nice scent to it – I would say it’s a sweet, sort of cotton-candy kind of smell. Do keep in mind the scent is not strong or overpowering. If you don’t like sweet smells then this lip gloss might not be for you.
Final thoughts and recommendations:

I definitely recommend this product. It’s a great quality product that works great, is reasonably priced (price ranges between $5.99 –7.99 depending on your area – please keep in mind these prices are based on my area) and is easily accessible at your local drugstore or large retailer store. I liked this product so much that I went back and purchased three more.
